The Bridge is a mixed-use business and innovation park that has been designed to encourage an entrepreneurial culture and the development of knowledge-based industries in the Thames Gateway.

A joint venture between Prologis and Dartford Borough Council, The Bridge will integrate over 1.8 million square feet of commercial space with hotels and restaurants, new homes, community facilities and over 80 acres of public open space.

For organisations that are keen to be part of Europe’s largest area of regeneration, The Bridge is the perfect location.

Masterplan

The Bridge has been sensitively designed to protect and enhance the natural environment. Alongside the more formal landscaped areas, the development includes retained wildlife habitat, sports facilities and three freshwater lakes, all of which are linked by a network of footpaths and cycle ways.

The development is an ideal location for the sporting events that are run on site throughout the Spring and Summer months; these include triathlons, aquathlons, the Big South East Swim and The Bridge 10K.

Reflecting the ethos of The Bridge, artist William Jordan is creating a sculpture trail across the site. Made principally from re-cycled and reclaimed materials, the sculpture trail offers an interesting new perspective on ideas of innovation and sustainability.

Running through The Bridge, Fastrack Route A connects the development to the shops and leisure facilities in Dartford town centre and Bluewater as well as to railway stations at Dartford, Greenhithe, Gravesend and Ebbsfleet International.

“We are delighted that Mercedes-Benz and Motorline have decided to expand their dealership networks at The Bridge,” said Oliver Bycroft, Director, Prologis.  “Both companies will bring potential opportunities for local people and they will be a welcome addition to the community.

SEM BRINGS NEW APPRENTICESHIPS TO DARTFORD

Now that its new 122,500 square foot headquarters at The Bridge in Dartford is complete, high technology manufacturing company SEM is working with The Leigh UTC to create new education and training opportunities for young people, including apprenticeships in both manufacturing and engineering.

Now that its new 122,500 square foot headquarters at The Bridge in Dartford is complete, high technology manufacturing company SEM is working with The Leigh UTC to create new education and training opportunities for young people, including apprenticeships in both manufacturing and engineering.

SEM designs and produces high quality electric motors that are used in motion control industry sectors such as machine tools, renewable energy, and robotics. Although most of these products are exported worldwide, the company is committed to retaining its manufacturing base in the UK and to building a skilled workforce for the future.

“We make a world-class product and we need to bring young people into the company so that we can both develop our business and ensure its continuity,” said Michael Laming, CEO of SEM. “We are working closely with The Leigh UTC, our neighbours at The Bridge, to develop a comprehensive education and training programme. Ultimately, we are aiming for 10% of our employees to be apprentices.”

Along with manufacturing and engineering apprenticeships, SEM and The Leigh UTC are working together on a mentoring programme, work placements and engineering projects. SEM also sponsors the Arkwright Engineering Scholarships, which supports talented students through their A-Levels and encourages them to study engineering or technical design at university or through a higher-level apprenticeship.

“There is a skills shortage in North Kent and we firmly believe that the best way to prepare our students to work in the engineering industry is to work with local companies like SEM,” said Stephen Leahey, principal of the Leigh UTC. “This collaboration is an excellent opportunity for our students, particularly as the new SEM building is only a few minutes’ walk from the UTC.”

A joint venture between Dartford Borough Council and Prologis, The Bridge is a 264 acre mixed-use development that is growing into a new community for Dartford.

“We designed The Bridge to attract knowledge-based industries, such as SEM, to Dartford and we are delighted to welcome the team to their new headquarters,” said Paul Weston, senior vice president at Prologis. “We have worked closely with SEM to deliver a bespoke building and we are very pleased that the company is supporting so many new opportunities for young people locally.”

SEM designs and produces high quality electric motors that are used in motion control industry sectors such as machine tools, renewable energy, and robotics, printing and medical equipment.  By moving to the new building, which will include facilities for clean manufacturing, laboratories, research and development facilities, headquarters offices, materials storage and staff facilities, the company will be able to update and future-proof its processes within a highly controlled environment.

“We are delighted to welcome SEM to The Bridge,” said Jeremy Kite, Leader of Dartford Borough Council.  “SEM is world renowned in its field and I am certain that it will become a valued member of the local community.  The company not only has the potential to bring many skilled jobs to the town, but since it also supports engineering apprenticeships, it can offer a range of new opportunities for young people.”

The new building, which has been designed by Prologis to achieve a minimum BREEAM ‘very good’ accreditation and the best EPC rating possible for its size, is on schedule to complete by the end of the year.  Although the majority of SEM’s products are exported to an established customer base worldwide, SEM is committed to retaining its manufacturing base in the UK and this new facility represents a significant investment.

“The Bridge is an ideal location for SEM and we look forward to making a positive contribution to Dartford,” said Michael Laming, CEO of SEM.  “We always aim to recruit staff locally and we have a firm commitment to apprenticeship training, so we will be working closely with the Leigh UTC, our new neighbours at The Bridge.”
